Product Review & Results: Design Essentials Curlforming Custard

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

For those of you who follow and know me well, i'm sure you have noticed that I LIVE for a good twist out. I mean this past summer alone I have pretty much lived and died by the twist outs every style that I have worn, was created from a twist out.

Oh my god and when I discovered the flat twist out?!

Chiiiiiiile sign me up, close the deal I WAS HOOKED...pretty much for life. However as Fifi (my hair) grows and changes i'm slowly starting to learn that what I use on my hair solely has to be based off what she likes...because clearly my wants for my hair don't matter she has a mind of her own *insert side eye here*
Well, last week I think I discovered Fifi's new favorite product!!!

But lets not stop there this product is so darn good I think it should be in every Naturalistas top 5 styling product line up, especially if your hair type is 4C and are looking for great twist out definition!

This stuff right here?!?!?! Is like magic in a jar!

YES ITS THAT DARN GOOD!

AND PRODUCSED THESE RESULTS!!!

I honestly had not even heard that Design Essentials had come out with a line for us naturals. I know their products are like the holy grail for those with relaxed hair and are used in beauty shops, so when I stumbled upon their natural line at the Ubiquitous Hair Show I should have guessed it too would be a show stopper!!
You can read more about Design Essentials Naturals line HERE and check out all the rest of their products.

However this post is specifically about their Curlforming Custard.

After my wash day fiasco which you can read bout here *add link* I knew I had to do something with my hair for a few days, not only to protect it but to give it a rest after what I had just put it through, so of course it was time to twist it up!

I looked in my bag of products from the Hair show that I had been neglecting and found the Curlforming custard and decided to give it a try. Normally to twist my hair I just use Cantu Leave In Repair cream because it leaves my hair super hydrated once I take the twist's out, but lately I had been looking for definition in my twist outs sooooooo it was time to give something else a try.

This was my product line up for my twisting session.

Reading the back of the curl forming custards label it says best used in conjunction with *product name* which I had on hand but realized it contained ingredients that i'm allergic to so I decided to just pair it with the Cantu Leave In Repair Cream.

First opening the Curlforming custard I loved the smell, it gives off a light floral scent with almost a musk-esq under tone if that makes any sense. lol I don't know about you but what a product smells like can severely alter my opinion of a product no matter how good it is. Because lets be honest no one wants their hair smelling like poo.

The consistency, is that of jelly rather than a custard. I imagine custard to be creamy and thick this however is more gel like with a thick yet smooth consistency and it doesn't really give off a sticky feel. If you rub small amounts between your fingers it pretty much disappears. A super positive for me I hate products that turn sticky or leave those odd little clumpy gel like balls....I know yall know what I'm talking about lol.

As far as applying it to the hair,  lets just say a little goes a long long way. Especially if your mixing it with another product like I was. You really only need a pea size per twist if even that much. I also tested it on some hair by it self to to make sure it behaved the same way with no other products present. And *Drum rolls* i'm pleased to report that it did!! Still no evidence of film or residue on the hair during or after twisting. It actually absorbs very well into the hair and leave your twist feeling moisturized.

Once I was done twisting I could definitely see and feel the difference in my twist. They were much smoother and felt more hydrated than they normally do when I just use the Cantu alone. The ends of my hair also sprung up and curled a lot more. To say the least I had high hopes about my what my twist out results would be.

I let my hair "dry" over night and got up in the morning to get ready for work. Of course my hair was not completely dry...it was actually still pretty damp but I had not choice but to take my twists out and pray.

To my surprise even with still being wet the Design Essentials Curlforming Custard had set my hair and provided me with AMAZING twist out definition!!!

My curls were light and bouncy, my hair had amazing movement and was super duper soft!!!! I WAS IN LOVE!!! So in love that I put up a video on instagram showing off my results!

I couldn't believe that I got such great results on hair that was not even completely dry....I mean any natural knows taking out twist before they are done "setting" can be tragic, but nope Design Essentials didn't let me down one bit!!! I no longer have to live in fear of a "not so dry" twist out. My twist have hope dry or not *insert church stomp* and my dreams of beautiful bouncing curls...*insert preacher voice*...I said my dreams of beautiful bouncing curls shall live again!!!
Uh can I get an Amen!?
AMEN!!!

And for that I give the Design Essentials Curl Forming Custard a 4.5 out of 5 Curls!!!
Making this product a MUST HAVE and Pretty Girls Guide Approved!

Sidebar: Im in love with that rating system I came up with lol from now on all products will be rated on a scale of 1 to 5 curls =) one being leave it at the store and 5 being a must have product.

Over the next couple of days I used the pineapple method and documented how my curls held up. I must however mention that last week was the most humid its been in Baltimore in like ages so Fifi went through it. I had no hope of 5+ day hair and I don't believe that was the Curlforming custards fault at all lol.
